We had a great ride on Saturday

Monday, April 16, 2007, 01:57 PM EST [General]

We decided to ride early and try to avoid the rain that we knew was heading towards us - wreaking havoc across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana on Friday night. My folks called early Saturday morning, they had changed their course westward to try to avoid the storm front, dived south through Mississippi and ended up in Natchez (sp?) on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi River overnight. Said they ended up getting the tail end of it - a little hail, wind and rain, but nothing too bad. They might spend another night there, since it's a pretty place.

Anyway, back to our riding. I was running late as usual, and figured Yates would have already fed up, which he had, so I was hoping that I'd get there after Katie, knowing that the horses would follow her down the driveway when she pulled in. I beat her there but not by much, and sure enough, they did follow her down the drive. And then, since they were feeling so good in the nice cool spring morning, they started running all over the place as well. Great.

An hour later, I finally had her caught and saddled and we headed out.

It was a beautiful day, and the woods were perfect. We rode for 3 hours. The trails were great. Apparently, my folks and the neighbors have been cutting and marking more. We could have continued but I think Katie's boy was getting tired (or maybe it was Katie?). We ended up coming back through the pasture, which my folks have leased out to a neighbor. Showed her my old "stomping grounds" from when I was a kid. Such a beautiful place. It's so easy to just slip back in time and picture it when it was a working cotton plantation over a hundred years ago.

There's a new fence up in the middle section and he's got cows in there. Luckily, they were all at the front as we came through.

I've got some work to do out there before mom and dad come home. Fire ant beds EVERYWHERE! I guess I need to go buy a couple hundred pounds of something and get it all taken care of. Got some old barbed wire and posts to get down too.

Oh, well, I guess I should get back to work. Just wanted to report in on my ride! Hopefully, we'll find time sometime this week as well. Got a wedding this weekend, lots of family in town, no time to ride!

    Riding tomorrow

Friday, April 13, 2007, 03:13 PM EST [General]

My friend and I have decided we need to have an "Estrogen Ride" - just the two of us. She needs some "girl time" she says. She and her hubby work together, so I can certainly understand that!

We're planning to get together tomorrow morning at my parent's place and spend as much time in the woods as we can. The weather is sooo nice today - just a beautiful spring day in Georgia - 72 degrees and sunny. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be about the same, with rain in the afternoon.

Mom and I cut and marked some really great trails a few weeks ago in the woods behind their house. I think we can probably get three or four hours out of them, which is probably about enough. They're great trails, too. Their property borders some government land that surrounds a gigantic lake, so we've pretty much got as much room to roam as we want. There's some difficult stuff, ups and downs, creeks, hills, etc. Nothing kindergarten about it. You've gotta have a good trail horse to get through a lot of it. (Oh, by the way, I'm not a barrel racer - but I HAVE stayed in a Holiday Inn Express! LOL)

I can't wait! I want to leave work RIGHT NOW and go ride! I wish we had weather like this year-round.
