A Month! I need to update!

Saturday, August 11, 2007, 06:57 PM CST [General]

Dang, it's been a whole month since I updated this thing!   Well, Kinta and Kris are doing just fine!  Getting ready to head back to school. I moved into my house yesterday and am still getting things organized.  Hoping to sell Kinta before school gets started. Bought her as a summer project and now I'm wishing I could keep her but I just can't.  I can only afford to board one, so that would be one would have to stay at home, and I don't want to ignore one of them all year.  But I'm pretty sure she's going to a close family friend so I'll be able to keep track of her and see how she's doing in the future.  Kris is getting nice and fat finally!  Was having some problems with her weight but we've got it under control now.  Well, dinner is about done and then I'm headed over to my house to do some serious organizing and cleaning so I'll keep updating when I remember to!

And the prospect search comes to an end.....

Ok, so finally like 100 years later, I'll update my blog.  I've been soooo busy lately I haven't had half a chance to breathe, let along type an update.  Anyways, the filly that I posted about in my previous blog was a GO!  Went down to see her the day before I left to go to Cancun.  Drove nearly 3 hours to go look at her.  Got down there, started off kinda bad.  Guy goes out in the pen, he cannot catch her.  She's out there with 3 other horses, and they are just running from him, and to make things worse, he's chasing them.  Ok, fine, I can deal with a catching problem.  That's easy, maybe she just doesn't like him.  So I just asked if I could maybe help.  Guy says yes, maybe it just takes a female to catch her.  So I get the halter, go out there, and just stand.  They run around for a minute, decide that I"m not a horse eating monster, and they stop.  I go up, attempt to slip the halter on her head, she yanks away from me.  Ok, so her ears and head are a little sensitive.  Not a career ending problem, I can deal with that.  Finally get the halter on her with a little coaxing.  Lead her out, she follows me out of the muddy mucky pen, walks over a few logs that are outside the gate, and is fine with everything now.  A little skittery, but nothing to bad.  She's only 3(not 4 like I previously posted) so I don't expect her to be a pro at this.  I check her over, pick up all 4 hooves, which by the way look like they've been skipped the last 5 times the farrier was out.  She takes all that in stride, no biggie.  Guy starts to saddle her up for me.  I asked him to do it so I could watch her....Whole time she's got her ears layed back....she's ticked.  He hauls on her cinch like there is no tomorrow, and she jumps(I would have to).  So he tries to explain to me that she's normally not this way, normally a little angel, no problems....ok, fine.  So, guy takes her out right there in front of me, in the front yard and attempts to lunge her.  Which is fine, young horse, I understand that, but instead of a lunge line, or a lead rope, we're going to use the split reins that are attached to a bit, that's yanking around in her mouth, not to mention, a bit that she'd never had in her mouth because he couln't find the snaffle that he normally rides her in so he puts some bit with a little bit of shank in there.   So she's completely confused...Keeps turning to face the guy, she's not trying to be difficult, she just doesn't understand.  But she tries to please and she goes around in a circle or two, all the while he's yanking on her mouth.  Finally, to my relief and hers, he decides to stop lunging and get on.  He rides her for a few minutes, gets aggrivated with her because she's mouthing the bit(the same one that has never been in her mouth before) so it was a total fight from the get go.  I'm sitting at the trailer with my dad watching all this and I told him, ya know I hate to come this far and go home with an empty trailer, and I hate even more to leave her here with him, they just don't get along, and I think she could be really nice with some time on her and a person that wasn't wanting to make miracles in minutes.  So dad says go ahead, get on her, try her out, maybe I'm right, they just aren't for each other, and they do not work well together.  So I get on, ride around a bit in the yard(which by the way, isn't fenced in, and this is the first time she'd been rode outside of the roundpen or a fenced in area).  She does just fine, still mouthing the bit, but she's young and it's a new bit, no biggie.  Mainly just walked her around, few circles, stops, tiurns, trotted just a bit, but the ground was kinda rocky and sloped so couldn't do much more.  She behaved just fine for me, ears back but not pinned.  More of a listening position than a frustrated position as they were before.  So I told dad, for the way she's bred, she's registered, she's a mare, she's willing to learn, she hates this guy, and she's priced decently.  We've gotta take her home.  So, I pay the guy, he signs the paper transfer report, and we leave.  She does great on the trailer ride home, gets here, settles in nicely.  I left for Cancun the next day, so she probably thought I'd abandoned her, but she was happy to see me when I got back.  Everything's been great since.  Rode her several times now, and she's catching on fast.  Back in an O ring and she's much less mouth on the bit.  Catching has  gotten easier.  The headshy thing is completely gone, I honestly thing she was just terrified of the guy that owned her.  Had her first bath the other day.  A little jumpy but we got though it and she seemed to be enjoying it by the end.  She especially liked getting scrubbed.  Took a whole bottle of clipper oil but I finally got the massive knot that was her tail out.  Even had to trim her tail a little after that because it drug the ground.  Foundation lines sure do put nice thick mane and tail on them!  Anyways, I'll end this novel and post a pic or two of her.

Here's her pedigree if anyone wants to see - http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/berts+harlanne+kinta
